Frozen Shoulder: What Recovery Actually Looks Like

2 April 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Atharva Narvekar (PT)

Frozen shoulder progresses through freezing, frozen and thawing stages, often over 12–24 months. Aggressive stretching in the painful freezing stage usually makes things worse.

Early care focuses on pain control, gentle pain-free range, and protecting sleep. As pain settles, mobilisation and stretching become the priority.

In the thawing stage, strength work restores the rotator cuff and scapular control so the shoulder is durable, not just mobile.

People with diabetes have a higher incidence and often a longer course, which makes early, well-staged physiotherapy especially valuable.
